Losing my Religion - Finding my Spirituality

21 July 2010

The other day, I tried to summarise my spiritual journey a bit and came up with the following. I believe it is a reasonable overview of th steps I took and where I am now.

I feel I am beyond the traditional religious denominations and have come to a definition of god (not God) that does not require it to be a person or personal entity whatsoever. I was brought up as a protestant (which in my case meant a pretty progressive branch of protestantism). After my sister died, I studied reincarnation. Reincarnation came into play because at the time, there was a popular Dutch Christian author who started combining the traditional Christian views with reincarnation. Also, an Aunt and Uncle of mine stated they believed in reincarnation within their Christian views. So I got intrigued. Nowadays I see it merely as a possibility, not as a necessity, as wil become clearer in the end of this text.

Later, I studied Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc. and found out that there is a common core to all religions that can only be interpreted in a way that transcends the outer appearances of religions an goes to the Essence of what we humans are.

Later again, I started to realise that that Essence is merely the fact that the one binding thing between humans (and all living beings, for that matter) is consciousness, and that consciousness is non-dual, i.e. not confined to any individual, but ultimately a shared phenomenon. And, although I also realise that there is something more profound than consciousness out there, it currently serves as my definition of god: a field of consciousness from which and in which everything around us evolves, serving as the fabric from which we are made and at the same time as the medium through which we observe ourselves and all around us. It is consciousness that forms the continuity from life to death and back to life, meaning that, if there is something like reincarnation, it would be at the level of consciousness rather than at a personal level.

(To be continued in a few years' time, I guess...)
